Lesson One: Australia's Climate Zones

In this lesson, you will allocated into five group of four people. Your aim throughout the next four lessons is to be able to present a weather report to the class, summarizing the previous week's weather in one of the five major capital cities: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, using PowerPoint on the electronic whiteboard.

You will be given a number from one to five and those with matching numbers will be your group members for the next four lessons. Each number will represent the city your group will present your report on in lesson four:
  1. Adelaide
  2. Brisbane
  3. Melbourne
  4. Perth
  5. Sydney

In this first lesson, you will learn about the climatic zones of Australia: mediterranean, sub-tropical, semi-arid/grassland, arid/desert and temperate. You will answer the following questions in your notebook for each of the climatic zones:
  • What land area does this climatic zone cover?
  • What kind of flora and fauna live in this area?
  • What is the weather like across the four seasons?
  • What are some common weather events for this climate?
  • Which climatic zone does your major city fall under?

To help you with this lesson, and the following three lessons, the ICT Weather Blog will assist you in answering these questions. It is full of resources to help increase your understanding of the lesson, as well of the topic.
